The CS2 skin market: how it works

CS2 skins are the in-game look of weapons, knives and gloves. They do not affect gameplay, but people collect, trade and sell them for money.

What is a CS2 skin?

A skin is a finish for a weapon, knife, gloves or agent. For example, one AK-47 has dozens of different skins. A skin does not change accuracy, only appearance. Skins are kept in your Steam inventory and can be passed to other players through Steam.

Where skins come from

How the skin market works

A seller lists a skin at a price, a buyer pays, and the skin goes to the buyer through a Steam trade offer. Marketplaces differ in payment methods, commission and speed. On the Steam Community Market the money stays in the Steam wallet and cannot be withdrawn elsewhere. That is why people who want to sell a skin for local payment methods choose third-party platforms.

What affects a skin's value

In short: type and rarity, wear, pattern, stickers and overall demand. These factors are explained in a separate article: what a CS2 skin price depends on.

Tips for beginners

  1. Before selling, check the exact skin name: wear, StatTrak and Souvenir marks change the price sharply.
  2. Do not trust the price on a single site, compare prices from several sources.
  3. Turn on Steam Guard mobile confirmation and keep your account secure.
  4. Accept only trade offers you started yourself or that come from an official platform.
  5. Before confirming a trade, read the items inside and the sender carefully.
